How Consistent Soil Testing and Management Reduced Costs and Increased Yields For This Illinois Family Farm
Farm Profile
This family farm has a corn and soybean rotation on approximately 4,000 acres in western Illinois. In addition they also raise beef cattle.
The Challenge
This farm family was very active in taking care of their soils because they were aware that soil health was very important to achieving continued success in the growing of their crops. They spared no expense in doing what they felt needed to be done to grow excellent crops. Their yields were always in the top 5% of the county average.
However, they saw the increasing costs of doing the things they were doing. As many farmers do, they took the measuring of their soil health for granted and didn’t really see the necessity or importance of making sure that what they were doing was what really needed to be done. They usually had their input supplier conduct random soil testing from time to time, but nothing very consistent or complete.
The Result
Once meeting with SoilRight, they discovered that there were things they could do better that they had never tried before. Learning the processes of SoilRight, they saw a logical step by step process of controlling costs while also improving yields at the same time.
They noticed their plants became darker and had lost the undesirable yellow tinge and appeared healthier overall. They also found that yields went up 5 to 10 bushels thanks to treatments SoilRight prescribed. Spending on phosphorus and potassium went down as much as $70 per acre, significantly reducing costs.
With SoilRight, this farm was able to increase yields while decreasing input costs. Annual soil health check-ups and consistent soil management are proactive ways to achieve optimal soil health. More Testing and More Data = More Accurate Inputs, saving you money on products you may not necessarily need and creating more profit AND improved yields – a win-win situation.
